How do I record?

For the benefit of you the reader, I thought it might be fitting to describe briefly what goes into the audio recording that I do. First, lots of equipment. The gear pile you see in the picture is pretty tame by my standards. This recording had some questions as to how many stands, mics would be allowed as well where they could be placed in the chapel. I usually place the mics first. For this capture, I was limited to placing the microphone stand on the floor level and trying to reach to the balcony. Even with 15' of elevation I was a bit low. The director insisted on no mics in the balcony. I may be able to "fly" some in from the catwalk next time to get them properly placed.

Over the last couple eyars, I've got the actual front-end of the recording equipment miniturized to the point it will fit in that 50 lb case. It's a chore to lug it around but ALOT easier than loose equipment. The laptop is dual purpose, for school and for hobby.

Finally, capture the audio. Typically I'm doing live concerts which mean "crowd" noises. It's not always easy and I have to balance pickup techniques, microphone types, and the character the choir is seeking. Here's an example clip of the near final product for your listening pleasure (final hymn from Sunday's Epiphany Vespers at the Seminary): Apple QT MP4 media file, click to listen! As I have uggested in the past, if you know of any church choirs, high school or community band, bell choirs, etc that could use recording, give me a ring. I am very reasonable and I think the clip speaks for itself.
