Concordia's Lutheran Service Book

Concordia's Lutheran Service Book I went and picked up my copy of Lutheran Service Book (LSB) pew edition today at the CPH bookstore on campus. It's super classy looking with the embossed cover and gold cross. The paper weight is nicer than my LW (lighter but sturdy...) so it isn't too thick or heavy for one-handed use. It comes with place marker ribbons. The page numbers keep going from psalms to services and into the hymns so none of this "p.5 IN THE FRONT" bologna. It has the most used prayers right on the inside cover. (before communion, service, etc.) The best feature is the inclusion of the small catechism, lectionary, and petitions. Finally, a hymnal for home use! I hate patching together four books to accomplish this one need. Pick up your copy, you won't be disappointed. It's only $18.50!

Thanks for the first-hand report!
Downloaded the previous 100+ page 'preview', and really looking forward to putting it into use.

It was a wonderful day when it came in the mail. Some of the new hymnody is great. I've enjoyed reading Pastor Weedon's reflections on the new hymnody and the layout of the liturgy.

Indeed. Pr. Wheedon had some good comments.

Here they are:

Another set of comments for your edification...

Cruising Down the Coast of the High Barbaree: Lutheran Service Book

I love the "loud boiling test tubes" comment! That hymn always gets the crowds going!

The only comment with Josh S's comments is that he has retracted the statement about the NIV being in the new hymnal. Unless I'm mistaken it's nearly all ESV.

Correct! Of course, telling the difference in spite of the different lineage is difficult sometime. Neither is especially poetic or readable. I'll take ESV over NIV anyday and if it saves a few bucks, more power to them. (The one real reason LSB is under $20 is the ESV translations. NIV is just too expensive.)

Pr. Beisel has some comments, none too complimentary on the hymnody.

Frankly, if you like Chad Bird's hymns more than Stephen Starke's, then use them. I wish more had been included as well and perhaps more of Luther's as well but... you can't have it all.

How many hymns? 500? 600? There's bound to be some bad apples.
