Mormons and government

I had a classmate say he wouldn't vote for Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney is a Republican running for president. Mitt Romney is a Mormon. He wouldn't vote for him because he is a Mormon. Don't get me wrong, I don't like the LDS cult. I don't like Islam either. His being Mormon really isn't what matters here. It's not as if the president is an office for the furthering of any religious agenda. The presidential office was established for right rule and leadership of our nation. Here are some good posts with my comments below on this topic.

Mormons, misconceptions and media myths » GetReligion For all I know, Romney could pull a John Kennedy and make a brilliant speech tomorrow that stresses religious liberty and the right of all Americans to make up their minds about ultimate issues — while appealing to Republicans and independents to feel free to disagree with him theologically, but to back him politically. He could say that Americans enjoy a tradition of religious toleration (All religions are equal in the eyes of the state) but that no one should be coerced into believing that someone is a bigot if they do not embrace theological toleration (All religions are equal in the eyes of God). There are sincere disagreements about the nature of God between Jews, Christians and Muslims. These disagreements are not “misconceptions.” There are sincere disagreements between traditional Christians in all kinds of pews and devout Mormons who — as is their right — identify themselves as Christians, but have unique beliefs about the nature of God, the nature of Jesus and the nature of the Holy Trinity. These disagreements are not “misconceptions.” It is inaccurate to say that they are.
We don't share the same faith with Romney. I wonder though if the real issue isn't that he is Mormon but that he might turn on those who vote for him, largely the moral crowd and pursue his own agenda. I don't believe government is about religion in any case, establishing it or prohibiting it. It is about protecting liberty and the moral fabric of our nation. Unfortunately we've so emphasized Christian "morality", people have forgotten that everyone is innately "moral" regardless of their faith. They believe murder to be wrong (although the definition is loose, especially with the pre-born.) They believe marriage is a good thing (although there is confusion for what purpose and whether it need be heterosexual.) They think feeding and providing medical for the poor to be a good thing (with some greedy folks disagreeing.) Like with GW, the fear is real. Romney will get votes for his "moral" viewpoints. Yet many won't look at his political convictions and this will be their or his undoing.
House, M.Div.: How much for just the planet? Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is a pro-choice Mormon... Figure that one out. It's actually not against their satanic doctrine. But what do you expect from a religion created by a New York huckster and treasure hunter who was finding that it was really difficult to make a buck in his chosen "profession." And, right now, it's likely that Mitt might be the leading candidate of the moment for the conservative Republicans. Mormons believe that by going through masonic temple rituals, wearing strange looking underwear, and living a holy life that they can be given their own planet and do the wild thing with their wife for all eternity and thereby populate it with lotso little Mormon rugrats. Mitt is probably going to catch a fair amount of the moral majority sort of vote. Mormons are the family values satanic cult, after all. And, when you think that your eternal salvation and the fate of your planet depends on obeying the laws of your religion, you're going to probably turn out to be a fairly moral individual. As Paul McCain, Bill Weedon, and a few others in the blogosphere have pointed out, there's nothing wrong with being a moral individual. In fact, it's a good thing, especially for a politician. Mitt's probably going to have the view Christians want on most of the issues. He's wrong on what House finds to be the most important (and so won't get the House vote unless that position changes... and probably not then either...), but he's right on a lot.
House, M.Div won't vote for him because he makes exceptions for rape and incest for abortions. He can't in good conscience support him. I too share this position. I don't vote for people because they're Christian. I vote for folks if they hold up good government. I have had my moral convictions informed by my Christian faith. Yet independently I do believe it is our government's job to protect life. It's a Christian issue, to be sure... that is, loving neighbor and protecting him. But its also a civil issue, protecting life and punishing those who do not. House does a great job keeping faith and politics independent in his post. Read it in full.

This comes from a bunch of people sitting on the sidelines. I lived in Utah for 12 years and I know all about the LDS church...please.

My wife is catholic so I am a catholic scholar. They created the bible to place fear and control over their people. Kings wrote the book and the church ruled when it was written.

Chris: A quick perusal of the Gospels would be useful for a catholic scholar to do before making such a claim.

It is easy to bash on something that you know so little about.

Chris: Yes, House is pretty polemical. He uses strong language. He tells it as it is. The point is he doesn't confuse political tolerance with religious tolerance. Christianity does not accomodate other faiths. It is not universalistic. House is not universalistic.

Cult: A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.

Chris: A cult is the religious trappings associated with a particular belief, typically associated with non-Christian beliefs. You are indeed correct in your following assessment. Cult is a matter of opinion, in this case from a position of Christian conviction.

You could judge any religion in this manner. Who create the bible an who is to say it is correct? I would call the pope dull not charismatic so I guess Catholics are a cult...right? The catholic church did some pretty extreme stuff back in the day. Rape, torture, taking what they wish. If you didnt go to church and aggree with the church you were a witch and burned alive. A cult is a matter of opinion. We could define any religion in this manner.

P.S. Mormons arent the only ones that believe christ will come again and there will be destruction before he does. If you don't believe in it then why are so worried they will have all the food and you will need to beg.

Chris: What me, worry?
