Why I Am a Lutheran?
It should come as no surprise to you that most of my readers are Lutherans. What may surprise you is how we Lutherans feel about ecumenical dialogue (dialogue with other Christian denominations). Orthodox Lutherans enter into these dialogues with conviction and unwavering belief. We make no compromises on doctrine, as such a compromise would be a fundamentally alter our confession of the Gospel of Christ. The message is confused by the fact that the largest Lutheran church body in America willingly compromises its confession in order to enter into altar and pulpit fellowship with other denominations, many who teach contrary to our own tenets of faith. And so, this new website is a particularly refreshing look at the stories of conversion to Lutheranism from other Christian and non-Christian denominations. Such witnesses speak of the "main thing" more clearly than I have from the pulpit. Take the time to read some of these stories for your own edification:
Word and Sacrament: Conversion Stories You are not alone in your journey! Conversion is often a difficult process and there's no sense pretending that there isn't significant personal sacrifice that takes place for most converts. Indeed, Jesus words in Matthew 10:34-39 take on a very personal flavor for people who are considering a new church home due to doctrinal issues. Fortunately, many people who have come to the Lutheran Church have done so through conversion. Though this website is new, over time you will find an increasing number of stories from converts of all different backgrounds. We hope that their stories will be an encouragement to you!Another great resource and one that helped me immensely toward entering the seminary was Daniel Preus's little book "Why I Am a Lutheran: Jesus at the Center " It is a terrific little compendium on the Lutheran faith (although still not as concise and precise as Luther's Small Catechism. Go figure!) In addition to the above resource, I would urge you to pick up Preus's volume for a quick refresher (if Lutheran) or a brief overview (if not.)
