Leopard is better and faster than Microsoft Vista

Personal Technology - WSJ.com: Personal Technology columnist Walt Mossberg says the new operating system keeps Apple ahead of Microsoft, but it's not revolutionary, with only a handful of core novelties. (Oct. 25) The Mac is on a roll. Apple Inc.'s perennially praised but slow-selling Macintosh computers have surged in popularity in the past few years, with sales growing much faster than the overall PC market, especially in the U.S. By some measures, Mac laptops are now approaching a 20% share of U.S. noncorporate sales, up from the low single digits where they once seemed stuck. There are several reasons for this, including the security problems in the dominant Windows platform from Microsoft; spillover from Apple's blistering success with its iPod music players; the fact that Macs can now run Windows programs; and Apple's highly successful chain of company-owned retail stores. But another key factor has been the Mac operating system, called OS X, which came out in 2001. It has proved to be as powerful and versatile for mainstream consumers as Windows, yet easier to use and more secure. And Apple has upgraded OS X far more rapidly than Microsoft Inc. has upgraded Windows, bringing out major new releases roughly every 18 months, while Microsoft struggled for more than five years to produce the latest Windows iteration, Vista, which came out in January. On Friday evening, Apple will release yet another new version of OS X, called Leopard, to replace the current version, known as Tiger. I've been testing Leopard, and while it is an evolutionary, not a revolutionary, release, I believe it builds on Apple's quality advantage over Windows. In my view, Leopard is better and faster than Vista, with a set of new features that make Macs even easier to use.
Convinced to go to a Mac yet? You should be. When its time for your next computer, go to an Apple store and give it a whirl. You won't regret it.

The Apple's definitely have style and panache... I still see my B-School colleagues struggling with compatibility issues, despite the great strides Mac has made. Perhaps next time... *grin*

Not really, I can't say as I was ever really impressed with OS X, when I used it in school.

If you want speed, flexibility, and stability go with Ubuntu Linux distro and just to make it better it is open-source, so you don't have to pay out the wazzu to run it. Load the windows emulation and it too can run windows based programs and for a lot cheaper than Apple. It may not be as fast when running windows aps but the nice thing about Linux is that new stable releases come out nearly ever 6 months, so the likelihood of seeing improvement quickly is high.

Also, going against Vista is like beating a dead cow. Experienced Windows users won't touch it, hence Microsoft making it easier to get new systems with XP. When we upgraded the computers in our church office, we unloaded Vista and installed XP. The only thing easier to trash is Windows ME.

We can agree to disagree on this matter, methinks.

I have no compatibility issues via running dual-boot for gaming (not that I do such things) and virtualization via Parallels/VMWare for running Windows bible softwares.

Agreed on the matters of Windows. I'm tempted to run Ubuntu for a server box but may go with OS X for that too. The beauty of Mac OS X (and most of apple history) is tight hardware/software integration. Some find this a limitation but drivers and support has never been an issue, especially after moving to a UNIX environment (e.g. Gimp for printing, Samba for file sharing, etc.)

Dr Luther is right. Open source is cheaper and is developed continually. On the other hand I am not convinced it is a better solution for the end-user.

I made the leap a year ago and have not looked back. My only issue with Apple has been Safari which I just can't stand. I just don't understand how everything else can be so user friendly but when to the browser...
As soon as I get the missus to the Apple store (or Best Buy now) and show her Leopard, I'll have no problem convincing her that it would a good idea to upgrade.
