Summary: Throughout all the readings for Ash Wednesday, one theme is mentioned repeatedly, that is, fasting. Lenten fasting is plagued by many errors. That is not to say it cannot be entered into for good and efficacious purposes. The key is the examination of the conscience through the Ten Commandments. Through reflection upon what we have done and what we have left undone, we learn how to fast in a way that is “training in righteousness.”
