Laetare ’12 – John 6:1-15

Old Testament: Exodus 16:2-21
Epistle: Gal. 4:21-31
Holy Gospel: John 6:1-15

Sermon summary: By the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand, we learn that Jesus is both the prophet who as come into the world (Messiah & Christ) and the Lord who supplies our every need of body and soul. We hear how Jesus gives us eternal things each week. We often forget He gives our every bodily need, daily and yearly. Teach us to pray: forgive us our trespasses and give us this day our daily bread.

Lenten Catechesis III 2012 – The Lord’s Prayer

Psalm 121 (antiphon: vv. 1-2)
Office Hymn: 421 Jesus, Grant That Balm and Healing
OT: 1 Kings 8:22-30; Ep: Eph 3:14-21; Gos: Mt 6:5-15
Catechetical Hymn: 766 Our Father, Who from Heaven Above

Summary: Prayer is not optional in the life of the Christian. First, God has commanded us to pray in the Second Commandment. Second, Christian prayer is a repetion of God’s Word back to Him. He has promised to hear prayer in His name and by His Word. Thus, prayer is both our duty and a gift from our heavenly Father. “Call upon me in the day of trouble… I will deliver you.” “Ask, and it will be given to you.”

Some would also accuse frequent prayer by the Lord’s Prayer as mindless or unthinking repetition. It is not, for it is given by Jesus himself and is His Word. Jesus teaches us why to pray, how to pray, and what to pray for. You can rest assured that this Word of prayer is pleasing to Him and will be heard by Him.

Lenten Catechesis II 2012 – The Creed

Summary: Last week we learned what God expects of us and what we are not to do. We learned how these commands remain God’s perfect and pure will, despite being far above our ability as weak people to accomplish. This week, we learn from the Creed not just who God is but how He equips us to do what He commands. The Creed describes His essence, will, activity, and work. “What kind of person is God?” “What does He do?” The Holy Trinity works to not only give and preserve your life, but to redeem you and sanctify you.
